December 1, 2019, in Wuhan/Hubei (China) the first suspected case of the now global outbreak of the “coronavirus” disease was detected.  Since that date, the World Health Organization, and global Health Concerns, such as our own U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have declared a Public Health Emergency.  As of 11:00 AM/March 6,2020, those suffering from COVID-19 (the official designation of the coronavirus) has topped 100,000 worldwide.  Here at home, our U.S. numbers are now at 250 cases, with the State of Washington being the hardest-hit for now, followed closely by California.

But as has been said, “Forewarned, forearmed; to be prepared is half the victory.” (Miguel de Cervantes)

So…..what really IS a virus?  How does one catch a virus?  What’s specific symptoms of COVID-19?  What’s the best way to prevent catching COVID-19?  IF we, or our loved ones contract COVID-19, what can we take, or give to help them through the illness?

Let’s go one-by-one in answering those questions:

What really IS a virus?

A virus is a small agent that infects a living cell and then replicates only inside the infected living cell of the organism.  When the virus is not inside an infected cell or in the process of infecting a cell, they exist in the form of independent particles, or virions, consisting of: (A) The genetic material {i.e. long molecules of DNA, or RNA which transfers the ‘code, the structure of the proteins by which the virus acts; (B) A protein ‘coat’ or ‘shell (the capsid), which surrounds and protects the genetic material; and in some cases (C) An outside ‘envelope’ made of lipids.  The virus itself is not truly a ‘living organism’.

So, how does one ‘catch’ a virus?

The ‘mode of transmission’ of any given virus, really, depends on the virus.  In the case of the COVID-19 virus (since that’s what we’re really focused on today), it is thought that the primary mode of transmission is by respiratory droplets.  So, for example, if someone’s positive for COVID-19, and they are coughing and sneezing, ‘spray’ from the infected person, carrying COVID-19 virus, could travel up to six-feet away!  Also, then, there’s shaking hands with someone who’s got COVID-19; touching a doorknob following their having done so; as well as other surfaces that the COVID-19 patient may have touched.  AND, then, IF we touch our own nose, eyes, or mouth, we then, inadvertently transfer the virus to ourselves.  Note:  On a positive note, at present, it does not appear that COVID-19 is an ‘airborne’ virus (like measles or smallpox) – so, COVID-19 is not simply ‘floating’ around waiting for us to breath it in.

What’s the symptoms of a COVID-19 infection?

Flu-like symptoms (aching joints; fever; cough; sore-throat; ‘just don’t feel well’).  By day four, patients may begin to experience shortness-of-breath and signs of early pneumonia.  Day seven has been the most challenging day, reports indicate this is the bottom of the pit, so to speak.  From day seven to eleven, patients begin to get better, with day eleven clearly showing signs of full recovery.

What’s the best way to prevent catching COVID-19?

The best method of prevention – AVOID being exposed to the COVID-19 virus.  Now, that sounds much easier than reality dictates.  So, good ‘ground-rules’ to apply: Avoid, as much as possible, close contact with those who are sick; Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth – especially IF you’ve come in contact with someone who’s ill; Stay Home IF you are sick; Cover your cough/sneeze with a tissue….THEN throw the tissue in the trash; Clean/disinfect frequently touched objects/surfaces using regular household cleaning sprays/wipes; Wash your hands with soap/water for at least 20 seconds after using the restroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose/coughing/sneezing (IF soap/water not available – use a hand-sanitizer).

(Bonus Question)….Oh-by-the-way….What about use of the face mask….At this point in time, we’re seeing that the use of face masks is more appropriate for those patients who have COVID-19 versus for those who have not yet contracted the virus.

IF we, or our loved ones contract COVID-19, what can we take, or give to help them through the illness?

Bottom-line, there currently is no vaccine, or specific treatment for COVID-19.  Care is basically supportive.  Here’s suggestions for such supportive treatment:

  • Fever/Pain: Analgesics – Acetaminophen (preferred); Ibuprofen; Naproxen (Avoid ASA)
  • Cough/Cold: Multiple-OTC products with Dextro-methorphan
  • *Dry-out the nose: Antihistamines……
  • *And….then there’s Vitamin C….
